Every year the sport of swimrun is becoming more and more popular, especially here in Australia.
We’ve seen a huge amount of runners take up the sport because of its primarily running nature with a hint of swimming.
Whether you’ve taken up the sport because you love trail running or you’re an avid runner looking at joining the amazing sport of swimrun, we’ve compiled our top five reasons why runners should try swimrun.
1. Swimrun events are mostly running
Swimrun events are mostly made up of run legs.
Yes, there are swim legs involved otherwise it wouldn’t be called swimrun but most events around the world are primarily made up of run legs.
At Swimrun Australia our events average 79% running with some of our longer events having up to 85% running in them, making them the perfect event for runners.
2. Increase your cardiovascular fitness
In swimrun, you have to transition from swimming to running to swimming to running and repeat that multiple times.
The repetition of two high-intensity activities one after another helps to increase your cardiovascular system and build endurance which will help to improve your overall running performance.
3. Rest your legs during the swim legs
Many runners who are participating in our events and other swimrun events around the world for the first time, like to use the swim legs throughout the race as a rest leg.
They choose to do this because swimming isn’t their strong suit and this allows them to reset before going hard and giving it their all in their best leg – the run.
As you start to do more swimrun events and get better at building up your swim fitness, you can start to treat the swim legs as less of a rest leg.
4. Fine-tune your trail running skills
Swimrun events are a great way to fine-tune your trail running skills for our trail runners out there.
With the majority of run legs in swimrun races being held on either on trails or offroad, getting involved in the sport gives you the perfect opportunity to fine tune your trail running skills before your next trail running race.
Between training for the swimrun event on the trails and the actual event, you will have ample time to fine-tune your trail running skills.
5. Join the swimrun community
One of the best parts of getting involved in swimrun is becoming a part of the swimrun community.
The swimrun community is something different, it’s like one big supportive family and whether you’re doing a swimrun in a team or as an individual you will always be supported, with every swimrunner encouraging, cheering and supporting each other from the start to finish.
